Jackson Bottom Magic
DETAILS
The Jackson Bottom Magic is a lure that catches fish like no other. It's extremely versatile, extremely easy to use, and can even work when other lures and don't. It's the perfect lure for those who want to start out in lure fishing because it's just so effective.
The Bottom Magic lure has a weighted chin which allows it to sit on an angle on the bottom and hop along like a small bottom feeding fish. It sinks down relatively quickly, so all it takes is little flicks and twitches of your rod to get it moving along the bottom with a very natural presentation.
In terms of fish species caught, the Bottom Magic has to be THE highest achiever we've seen to date. It's great for a massive range of typical estuary species like Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Bass, Perch, Trout, Blackfish and even Squid, but can also be used off the beach and offshore for other species like Kingfish, Salmon, Bonito, Tailor, Snapper and more. There's another type of Bottom Magic made specifically for Australian saltwater conditions called the Jackson Bottom Magic Saltwater Lures that has some bigger and heavier options pre-rigged with double hooks, and there's a Bottom Magic Light Tune which is basically the same as this standard Bottom Magic only 1.5g lighter.
In terms of colour choice, the lighter colours are usually better when the sun is out and/or the water is clear, and the darker colours work better at at night or in murkier water.
HOW & WHERE TO USE:
It's important to note that the Bottom Magic Lures really don't require much action at all to work well. We've found the best action is to wind in the slack line slowly, let the lure sit for a second and then give your rod a very small twitch or two so the lure jumps off the bottom a little. Then simply wind in the slack line and repeat the action. It's also great while slowly drifting along in a boat or kayak, then you don't even have to wind you just wait for the slack line to dissappear before twitching again. It's that easy!
The Bottom Magic can be used in a lot of different areas and conditions effectively:
- Along the sand flats it's great for chasing Whiting with a constant, medium paced wind and little flicks in between. As soon as you stop the Whiting will lose interest so keep it moving. It can also be used along the flats for Flathead and Bream though, and they don't mind a pause here and there.
- They're great around structure like fallen trees or rocks for Bream, Bass and Perch. Here it's best if you do allow for a pause after every flick or two of your rod.
- On sandy drop-offs they can be worked along them, up them or down them effectively for plenty of species, but the Flathead are especially active in these spots and will have a good go.
